On 10 September 1994, and in an event reminiscent of some of the greatest discoveries of modern history, a NSW National Parks Ranger by the name of David Noble stumbled upon perhaps one of the most important botanical finds of the century. While abseiling in the Wollemi National Park near Sydney, Noble encountered a canyon filled with large, unique looking pine trees that seemed prehistoric in nature.
Later identified as ‘The Wollemi Pine’, an ancient tree species believed to be extinct for millions of years, and with the rarity of the discovery being likened to finding a living dinosaur. The Wollemi dubbed the ‘Dinosaur Tree’ or ‘Living Fossil’ has quickly gained fame as a botanical marvel and one of the most significant finds of the past 120 years.
Until this day this amazing tree was thought to be extinct and only known by fossil records.
The Pines can survive temperatures from -5 to 45°C and are expected to withstand even cooler temperatures.
Each Wollemi Pine comes with an information booklet and a certificate of authenticity to prove that you have purchased a piece of genuine Jurassic history.
These gorgeous trees are currently the perfect size for either keeping in a pot or planting in the ground. They can be maintained in a pot almost indefinitely and is well suited to patios, verandahs and courtyards. It can also be used as indoor decoration in well lit areas as it is able to tolerate air-conditioning.
If planting in a container:
*Use a premium quality Native Potting Mix.
* Water as soon as the potting mix becomes dry in the top 5cm of the pot, which can be every one or two weeks.
*Do not over water or leave the pot sitting in a saucer of water.
* If kept indoors, ensure the plant is in a well lit position preferably near a window or doorway, and take it outside to a shaded and sheltered position one week in every month.
*Use a slow release, low phosphorus granular fertiliser and feed with liquid fertiliser for optimum growth.
* Prune in the winter months to maintain a compact form.
If planting in the garden:
* Ensure the hole you dig is at least twice the width of the pot and be sure to saturate the potted plant before you plant. This is best done by submersing the root ball in water until all air bubbles cease to rise.
* Immediately after planting, water the soil around the plant deeply. You should water the tree deeply every 5-7 days until the plant has established new foliage and then water during drought periods.
