We have Tasmania’s largest range of Vireya Rhododendrons
Known as the Tropical Rhododendron, Vireyas are a subgenus of rhododendron. They are sub-tropical shrubs originating from SE Asia to Australia. These beauties will bring a stunning burst of colour to your garden and outdoor living areas.
A truly versatile and hardy plant, they will tolerate the cold winters of Tassie as well as warmer summer temperatures. Most Vireyas are ideal for container growing on a balcony, on (or under) a tree, or in a shadehouse.
Large clusters of trumpet shaped blooms are produced throughout the year, but most prolifically during Autumn and Spring. Some varieties produce flowers that are highly fragrant. Flower colours range from pale creams and crisp whites, to brilliant oranges, shocking pinks, and deep reds.
We have an assortment of varieties including Dixie, Saxon Glow, Red Mountain, Currie Ochre and Irian Jaya.
Growing Tips
- Plant in a position where Vireyas are sheltered from heavy winds or salty breezes, that has bright but filtered light.
- Plant Vireyas no deeper in the ground than they are in the pot - plant into mounds 45cm high, or a raised bed.
- If you have heavily chlorinated tap water, put water into a watering can and leave overnight before use. This will allow the chlorine to outgas overnight.
- Use a good quality Orchid Potting Mix and a slow release fertiliser for orchids.
