The West Indian Lime, also known as Key Lime, Bartender’s Lime or Mexican Lime, is considered the “true lime” and is prized for its intense flavour and fragrance. The small, juicy fruit has a thin green to greenish-yellow rind and highly aromatic, acidic flesh, making it excellent for drinks, cooking and South-East Asian cuisine.
This vigorous evergreen citrus has glossy green foliage, fragrant creamy-white flowers and a bushy, somewhat thorny habit. Growing to around 4 metres, it can be planted in the ground or grown in a large pot.
Plant in full sun in a warm, sheltered position with well-drained soil. West Indian Lime is frost sensitive and should be protected from strong winds, particularly during flowering and fruit development.
