Juglans nigra
Originally from North America featuring dark-coloured timber and bark.
The nuts are harder to extract than those of the more common Juglans regia (the common walnut variety) and is a very highly flavoured nut - they are so rich that usually only a few are eaten at a time. Oil is pressed from the seeds.
Black walnuts are harder to shell than other varieties - which may be a help in keeping birds from stealing your harvest.
Black Walnut is highly prized for its wood, being used extensively for furniture, flooring, wood craft and many other industries.
