Ornamental Shade & Delicious Summer Fruit

The Black Mulberry (Morus nigra) is a long-lived, deciduous fruit tree valued for both its ornamental beauty and richly flavoured, dark purple-black fruit. It forms a broad, naturally rounded canopy with deep green, heart-shaped leaves up to 12cm long, which turn a soft yellow in autumn before falling to reveal the tree’s attractive branching structure.

In late spring, small, greenish flowers appear, followed by edible mulberry fruits around 2cm long that ripen through summer. These sweet, juicy fruits are ideal for eating fresh, drying, or using in jams and preserves. While the fruit is a bonus, Black Mulberry is also commonly grown as a feature or shade tree, thanks to its graceful form and dense canopy.

A hardy and adaptable tree, Morus nigra thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and can handle light to moderate frost. This self-fertile variety requires no pollinator and performs well in warm temperate and Mediterranean-style climates.

Size: Approximately 8–12m high x 8m wide at maturity.
Uses: Feature tree, shade tree, productive orchard planting.

With its combination of summer fruit, autumn colour, and elegant structure, the Black Mulberry is a timeless favourite for large gardens, courtyards, orchards, and rural landscapes.
